Avoiding Wedding Scams in Denmark: What Couples Need to Know

how to trust a wedding agency

Marrying in Denmark is one of the quickest and most straightforward ways for international couples to formalise their relationship legally. But the rise in small, inexperienced, or misleading agencies has created real problems for couples who are already under pressure.

We regularly hear from people who chose an agency based on price alone, only to discover too late that they have been misled, left without a wedding date, or are suddenly facing immigration issues.

Beware of “priority processing” claims

A growing number of agencies are advertising “priority processing” with the Danish Agency of Family Law or claiming special access to government staff. These claims simply aren’t true.

There is no such thing as priority processing for agencies. All legitimate agencies follow the same official procedures, timelines, and communication channels. Even the “priority phone line” some agencies boast about is nothing more than a standard line available to all recognised agencies.

If an agency suggests they can bypass the legal system, move you to the front of the queue, or secure guaranteed same day approvals, treat it as a major red flag.

Cheap fees often come with hidden risks

Many newer agencies charge significantly lower prices, and it can be tempting when budgets are tight. But the true cost of a cheap agency becomes clear when things go wrong.

We find ourselves saying to couples:

“So you had the option of going with an agency with literally thousands of 5-star reviews, and you went with an agency that has 34 reviews – purely because they were €50 cheaper and spoke your language?”

Unfortunately, this is often the point where one member of the couple is facing deportation, the wedding date has collapsed, or the agency has stopped replying altogether.

Remember with a top rate wedding agency you’re paying for expertise, legal understanding, correct paperwork submission, communication with the authorities, and the confidence that nothing will fall through the cracks.

Watch out for unrealistic promises

If an agency claims they can:

  • guarantee approval
  • promise timelines that are quicker than the official process
  • arrange weddings in dates that town halls do not offer
  • provide “express” packages without explaining legal steps
  • secure venues that are fully booked
  • priority phone line contact and access with the Agency of Family law
  • priority processing of applications with the Danish Agency of Family law

…these are strong signs of inexperience or deliberate misrepresentation.

The Danish process is extremely efficient but it is also extremely clear. Any agency suggesting shortcuts is either guessing or gambling with your future.

Lack of genuine reviews or inconsistent feedback

A small number of recent reviews isn’t automatically a bad sign, but an agency handling hundreds of couples each year should naturally build a large, consistent review history.

Common warning signs include:

  • a suspiciously small number of reviews
  • many reviews written on the same day
  • generic or overly promotional comments
  • no third-party review platforms
  • stories from other couples about unresponsiveness or cancellations

When you are choosing someone to handle your legal marriage, credibility matters far more than price.

No clear communication or unclear guidance

A good agency will always:

  • give you clear instructions
  • check your documents properly
  • explain the official timelines
  • communicate in plain language
  • respond professionally and promptly

If you’re receiving vague answers, pressure to “book now”, or inconsistent information about what the Danish authorities require, it’s a sign they don’t understand the process well enough. Mistakes at this stage can lead to delays, refusals, or worse: complications with your visa status.

Transparency is essential

A reputable agency will never hide:

  • fees
  • refund policies
  • what is included in your package
  • who they are
  • where they are based
  • how they operate

If anything feels “foggy”, trust your instincts.

Choose experience over promises

The fastest, safest way to marry in Denmark is not through shortcuts or magical “priority access”. It’s through:

  • correct paperwork
  • expert checking
  • realistic timeframes
  • reliable communication
  • strong relationships with the town halls and venue teams
  • years of experience guiding couples through different legal situations

Most couples who come to us after a bad agency experience didn’t know what to look for, or assumed all agencies work in the same way. Sadly, they discover the differences only when things have gone wrong.
