Documents needed to get married in Denmark
Since the new Danish Marriage laws came into effect in January 2019 there has been a slight change in documents. Denmark is still one of the best places to get married in Europe or the world, and is still a good option for cheap, fast, affordable registry office weddings. All Applicants need to provide;
- Valid Passports or EU ID cards (must have minimum of 3 months expiration on document from date of wedding).
- If you are not living in your country of citizenship, a valid residence permit (where applicable).
- If you do not have visa free entrance to the Schengen Zone then a valid Schengen Visa with validity for the date of the ceremony.
- If you are divorced or widowed, the original full and final divorce decree or death certificate, this must be legalised within in accordance to the Hague Convention.
- Proof that the relationship is ‘true’ and this is something that we will guide you through as we will prepare for you a ‘relationship document’ but it is very easy and just photos and communication to show longevity and contact
- If you have shared children and/or live together we add evidence as this speeds the file along

Do I need a birth certificate to marry in Denmark?
If you are getting married in Denmark you do not need your birth certificate for the application for a license with the Danish Agency of Family law.

Can I get married on a tourist VISA?
Yes! If you are getting married in Denmark you only need to have legal entry, by way of a Tourist Schengen VISA, 90 day VISA free period, EU residency permit. There is no requirement to be a full time registered Danish resident or Citizen. You just need to be physically in Denmark in person for your wedding and have legal border entry.

How long do I need to be in Denmark before my wedding?
In Denmark you have to present your ID documents and visas/residence permits/schengen entrance stamps (if applicable). This can be immediatley before the ceremony or the day before depending on the town hall where you are marrying. Your wedding planner will go through this with you when discussing your options.

What documents will I need to physically take with me to Denmark?
You will only ever need to present the originals of your passports, travel documents, EU ID, residency permit or VISA to the clerk at the venue you are marrying either the business day before the wedding or the day of the wedding (venue and service depending). You will not be asked to present any documents other than the ones you have sent as photos/scans for your application with the Danish Agency of Family law (Familieretshuset). Your consultant will confirm to you what you need to physically present, where and when, at the stage your license is issued and your ceremony is formally confirmed.
