What Can and Cannot Happen When Getting Married in Denmark

As with all industries you have the good and the bad, the experienced and the inexperienced, and it can be a minefield. In the Danish wedding industry we have the same issue and many inexperienced Agencies have popped up and have at best 50% success rates as they have no experience with Government paperwork, offices, or marriage application process.

What Can and Cannot Happen When Getting Married in Denmark

What Can Happen

Fast and Simple Marriage Process

Denmark is renowned for its streamlined wedding process, making it an ideal choice for international couples. Provided all required documents are in order, couples can often get married within days of arriving.

Weddings for International Couples

Denmark welcomes couples from all over the world, including those facing visa or residency challenges in other European countries. Many couples choose Denmark precisely because of its inclusive and accessible system.

Legal Recognition of Marriage

Once a marriage is performed in Denmark, it is legally recognised worldwide. This makes Denmark a reliable option for couples who need their union validated in their home country or elsewhere.

Choice of Ceremony Locations

Couples can select from a variety of wedding settings, from simple town hall ceremonies to picturesque locations such as beaches, castles, or scenic countryside spots. Many wedding planners offer bespoke packages to tailor the experience to individual preferences.

Flexibility in Paperwork Submission

The application is made with digital copies of required documents, reducing the need for excessive travel and making the process more convenient for couples. You simply present the original passports/EU ID/Residency permits (as applicable) to the venue you are marrying before the wedding.

What Cannot Happen

A Wedding Cannot Be Annulled by a Planner

No wedding planner or third party has the authority to annul a legal marriage in Denmark. Only government or legal authorities can oversee such a process. If a planner claims they can cancel a wedding or threatens to do so, they are acting fraudulently.

Planners Cannot Withhold Money Unjustly

Wedding planners may charge fees for services, but they cannot legally withhold funds for services not rendered. If a planner fails to deliver on their promises, couples have legal recourse.

A Wedding Cannot Proceed Without Proper Documentation

While Denmark offers a relatively simple system, couples must still provide the necessary legal paperwork, such as legal entry into Denmark and any divorce or death certificates of previous partners.

A Planner Cannot Book a Wedding Without Confirmation

Some unscrupulous planners may promise wedding dates without actually securing them with the venue or with a license from the Danish authorities (Agency of Family law). Marry Abroad Simply are the only Agency with a dedicated private registrar calendar in Copenhagen City Hall and can pencil you in pending approval of license. A confirmation will be sent to you once the license is received and the date is booked, only then should you book travel.

False Claims of Experience Do Not Guarantee Legitimacy

Some planners exaggerate their experience or claim to have arranged thousands of weddings without providing proof. Couples should conduct due diligence by reading verified reviews and requesting references before booking services.

How to Protect Yourself When Planning a Wedding in Denmark

Choose a Reputable Planner: Research wedding planners carefully, check verified reviews, and confirm their legitimacy through official channels, such as LinkedIn.

Get Everything in Writing: Ensure all agreements are documented in a clear contract that outlines services, costs, and terms.

Be careful of false claims: Such as faster processing times with the Danish Agency of Family law (AFL), as they are a Government office, that option for fast track processing and bypassing the 5-7 working days is simply impossible and not available.

Be Wary of Red Flags: If a planner requests money up front and for you to sign something before you have even had a documents list or sent documents in, makes threats and pressures you, withholds money being refunded if they make a mistake, or stops responding, take immediate action and report them to the police.

An Agency that says they have helped thousands of couples but only has a couple of hundred reviews is either lying about the number of couples they have helped and are not experienced, or are not very good and couples are choosing to not leave reviews.

Verify Your Booking: Always request a copy of the License from the Danish Agency of family law that your license is issued and the wedding is scheduled. You are in your rights to ask for evidence that the application has been filed and to request your case number.

And if something is cheap and too good to be true, it generally is, just remember you get what you pay for.
