Registering your marriage certificate after the wedding

Once you are married in Denmark or Gibraltar and you have your wedding certificates in hand, a lot of couples then ask us what they need to do then.  All the excitement of the planning and arranging has been and gone and the day has passed with all the fun and love that this involves there now is a tiny bit of administration that needs to be done.  Registering the marriage.

Of course every country is different and there are different processes that you need to explore that is individual to your own circumstances. However the Danish Authorities don’t tell anyone that you are married, they simply keep a file of the certificate in their system for 100 years.  It is, in fact up to you to register the marriage in your places of residence and or citizenship.

We will always recommend to our couples that you must ask at the office where you are registering the marriage what you need to do, the are the office that will know and be able to offer you exactly what you need to do.  Lots of them will simply accept the certificate as it.  But you will need to take the certificate to the office to register yourselves as married.  This will result in the changing of your martial status, and if you like to be able to change your name on your documents.

One question that we will also ask is if you need the Apostille Legalisation Stamp on the certificate.  This can be needed certainly outside of the EU and also in some EU countries. Even though your Danish marriage certificate is valid and legal worldwide there may be some offices that need an extra authentication.

An Apostille Stamp is a stamp made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that ensures that the certificate is a ‘true’ Danish document and it is valid for use in other countries.  We can arrange this for you at any point in the process, we can do it immediatley after the ceremony or 6 months after or 6 years!  All we need is an original copy of the certificate (we can re-order these from the town hall if needed) and we will then get the Apostille Stamp.

The Apostille Stamp is very easy to get and we can do this for you with our Apostille Service.

In Gibraltar the we arrange for the certificates to be issued with the Apostille Stamps.

In Denmark, if you are marrying outside of Copenhagen then we can do this for you with our Apostille Service or if you are in Copenhagen you can go and get the stamp yourselves and we will let you know exactly what is needed for this.
