Anna & Sebastien
Anna & Sebastien’s Wedding in Denmark
What are your future plans and goals now that you’re married?
We recently moved from London to the beautiful Scottish coast, where we’re taking some time to decide where we’d like to settle long-term while continuing to build our careers. In the near future, we’re looking forward to new adventures in the UK, travelling abroad, and establishing friendships and a sense of community in our new home.
We’re also supporting each other in our personal goals. Sebastien is launching a business in freediving training and underwater photography in the UK while also travelling internationally for nature expeditions. Meanwhile, I’m enjoying my engineering role at a software company and setting up a new workspace for my blacksmithing hobby.
What hobbies and fun activities do you enjoy together?
We often joke with friends that we met 10 metres underwater, which is partially true! We first met while freediving in the Canary Islands, and we’re excited to continue our passion for diving, hiking, and outdoor adventures here in Scotland. The marine life is incredible, and the landscape is absolutely breath-taking.
When the weather isn’t great, we enjoy cosy evenings at home, working on art projects or playing PC games.
What did you enjoy about getting married in Denmark?
Aero was a stunning place to get married. The island is incredibly peaceful, and even during the height of the summer travel season, we were able to find quiet stretches of coastline where we felt completely alone.
The local community was so welcoming and we loved chatting with shopkeepers and artists while exploring Aeroskobing the day before our wedding. Touring the island’s landscapes and charming villages made the whole experience even more special.
What did you do while you were in Denmark?
We drove to Aero from Copenhagen and spent our first day exploring the island, searching for the perfect spots for a photoshoot with our photographer friend. It was an amazing way to take in the island’s beautiful beaches, windmills, and traditional countryside homes. Every village felt like a hidden gem.
The next day, our friends flew in from the UK, Spain, and France, just as eager to explore the island as we were. We all stayed in Marstal, a town rich in maritime history, which we found fascinating.
On our wedding day, after the ceremony, we had a small picnic with Danish pastries, local cheeses, and meats before revisiting some of our favourite spots for photos. We ended the day lounging on the cliffs at sunset with our friends, followed by a small house party filled with games and dancing.
What stood out to you about Denmark or the venue where you married?
The town hall where we got married was impressive – modern yet warm and welcoming. The officiant was wonderful, making the ceremony feel personal and meaningful despite its simplicity. Even our families, who joined via Skype, commented on how well-organised and smooth everything was.
From the moment we submitted our documents to the final legalisation process in Copenhagen, everyone we encountered was kind, professional, and genuinely congratulatory. We had expected a more impersonal process, but instead, it felt special at every stage.
Did you have any favourite foods, restaurants, or experiences?
Instead of a traditional wedding cake, I insisted on Cheese Danishes for our post-wedding picnic! Everything we tried was absolutely delicious.
We also visited Naja Abelsen’s art shop. She’s a talented local artist whose work tells beautiful stories. We purchased some of her illustrations to remember our time on the island.
Was there anything about Denmark that surprised you?
The amount of paperwork involved in the application process was a bit daunting at first (huge thanks to Marry Abroad Simply for making it stress-free!), but once that was done, everything else was incredibly smooth and efficient.
Compared to other bureaucratic processes this was refreshingly straightforward. Everyone we interacted with, from the town hall staff to the legalisation office, was helpful, friendly, and supportive.
What advice would you give to international couples considering a wedding in Denmark?
From a practical standpoint, Denmark is an excellent choice for international couples. The legal process is clear and efficient, and Copenhagen is easily accessible with frequent flights from all over the world.
Beyond the paperwork, Denmark is simply a beautiful country, with so much to explore. Whether you’re travelling by public transport, ferry, or rental car, it’s an easy and stress-free place to visit.
If you’re unsure about where to get married, Denmark is the perfect choice.
