When some people think of a European destination wedding, they envision a lavish affair on a serene beach, maybe a charming chateau in France or a picturesque Vineyard in Italy. While these ideas are ideal for many couples, others may prefer a more intimate setting such as an elopement. A romantic getaway with their fiance, a few close friends or family members, or just the two of them.

Marry for love, with practicality in mind
Couples tie the knot for a variety of reasons, young love and lifelong companionship, before starting a family and beginning a new journey together. In today’s world, financial considerations play a significant role, but this shouldn’t get in the way of marrying the one you love. Marriage symbolises commitment and carries financial implications that can impact your future together.
Financial benefits of marriage in different countries
Here’s a glimpse into the financial advantages of marriage in select countries:
Germany – income tax benefits through joint filing
The German income tax code allows married couples to fully split their incomes, benefiting from joint filing regardless of when they marry. This incentivises couples to marry later in the year, particularly in December, to maximise tax benefits.
We use data from the German Socio-Economic Panel to test whether couples with larger gains from joint taxation are more likely to marry late in one year instead of early in the subsequent year.
UK – Marriage Allowance for Couples meeting Specific Criteria
You can benefit from a Marriage Allowance if all the following apply:
- you’re married or in a civil partnership
- you do not pay income tax
- your income is below your Personal Allowance (usually £12,500)
- your partner pays income tax at the basic rate, which usually means their income is between £12,501 and £50,000
France – Parts System for Minimising Income Tax
In France, both married and PACS couples (a formal civil partnership between two people) are treated as one household for income tax purposes, so they can benefit from the Parts system that allows a couple to use both sets of rate bands to minimise income tax.
USA – Joint Filing Leading to Tax Breaks
Joint filing can lower the tax bracket for the higher-earning spouse, offering significant tax breaks for married couples, especially during property sales. A spouse without a job can put joint income into an IRA, using joint income, a privilege unavailable otherwise. Additionally, spouses are exempt from federal estate taxes upon the death of one partner.
UAE – Tax-free status for residents
If you’re a resident in the UAE but not a citizen, you are exempt from paying taxes. However, we always recommend that you double-check that you don’t have to pay tax in your country of citizenship.
Canada – Spousal transfers and tax benefits for married couples
Marriage offers a notable tax advantage through spousal transfers. If your spouse or common-law partner does not require all their non-refundable credits, they can transfer them to you, decreasing your tax burden. These credits include various categories such as age, pension income amount, disability amount and unused tuition credits.
