This is a picture of Linda and Dirk on their wedding day this Summer in the amazing Copenhagen City Hall almost 52 years after they first met which was in 1970 when they were only 12 years old.
Linda who lived in South Africa at the time, lived in a neighbourhood where there was a German school. Dirk who had just arrived in South Africa lived in the same area and as he was struggling learning English his mum took it on her shoulders to find Dirk an English-speaking friend who he can ‘hangout’ with and learn the language outside of school. Linda was that friend! … and that was it, Dirk became a fixture in the house and as it turns out in the whole families lives from that day forward.
Linda admits that he was her first love, “the love that you have when you are young and the love that you will never forget. “ But as in all love stories things didn’t go completely according to cupids plan in 1973, three years after meeting Dirk and his family had to move back to Germany to complete his education in Germany. Linda and Dirk were both devastated they were both 16 years old and they felt that they had lost the most important thing in their lives.
In the early 70’s the world was a lot different there was no internet, phones weren’t as common and long-distance call charges were astronomical, so the young couple vowed that their relationship wasn’t affected too much tried their best to keep in touch and in 1975 when they were both 18 Linda was able to travel to Germany to see Dirk, meet his friends and see where he lived, this made then feel closer than ever, and they had such a wonderful time, but after Linda returned back to South Africa they both agreed that they just didn’t know how they can make it work long-term.
Without any choice the couple of young loves ended their relationship. They both knew that one day they would be with each other again, but they didn’t know when or how that was going to be.
As lives do in your twenties and thirties life then took both on their own paths, they always kept in touch with each other throughout the years, they didn’t ever miss a birthday, but they each married other people and lived their lives, with their young love in the past. Then in 2004 they had
the opportunity to meet one another again. both were then separated from their spouses and the rest was completely natural, it was as if their lives simply moulded into each other’s and that was all they needed. After years of ‘getting to know each other’ all over again they finally moved in together in 2013 and started the life that they feel they should have started together back in 1975.
They have lived together until today in Germany and then in 2020, they made the decision to finally marry, and opted for a wonderful ceremony at the amazing Copenhagen City Hall.
Linda contacted us in July, with a date in September when they wanted to marry, and within a couple of days we had identified all the documents that were needed for the ceremony and had most of them sent over to us ready to make the application. There was one small question of one document that needed a stamp on from South Africa, Linda isn’t one to let that get in the way and the issue was resolved within a couple of weeks and all the documents were sent over so we could make the application.
We received the approval within no time at all and the date was booked for their ceremony.. everything was confirmed and settled with plenty of time for the fun part of the process to begin, the planning of the trip and the ceremony!
Everything went off without a hitch, Linda and Dirk had a wonderful time in Copenhagen and spent a few days there so they can enjoy the city after their special day.
When they were in Copenhagen they met with a wonderful photographer the day before the ceremony to have a quick chat about what they wanted and as you can see below the photos are just perfect, capturing the day with happiness and smiles, just as the day was. The photographer was Monica and is a photographer that lives and works in Copenhagen, her images are so lovely and Linda and Dirk were so happy with their choice of photographer as she made them feel so at ease in the day and directed them beautifully!
Linda chose the most amazing dress, every time I look at the photos I must comment on the dress, it is perfect!
« Our day was superb in every way. It was as we had hoped, simple, pitch up and be married.
We presented ourselves at the City Hall on the Monday, and it was a simple procedure. We had a look around the huge foyer and were so impressed.
The day itself was lovely. We were married by one Bo Moller Andersen and he was witty and personable. He had us laughing – he found it hillarious that we have known each other for 51 years.
We went to a wonderful restaurant in the evening and had a meal, that will long stay in our memories. It was 5 courses with wine pairings… Wow! Our day was memorable in every way and I am so very glad that we found you, as, I am sure we would have had many headaches without you. »
Helping Linda and Dirk with their wedding day has been such a pleasure as it is with all of our couples, however this one remains in my heart as it is a story with such a happy ending.
Thank you, Linda and Dirk, for letting us be the smallest part in your largest day.
