Everything has a beginning a middle and an end - we are now in the latter part of that saying it tentatively and hopefully seems with the COVID-19 wedding delaying situation, so we can dust off our passports and start to look forward to looking forward again.
And whatever the year 2020 has taught us, it's to keep those that are close to you as close as possible, don't leave to tomorrow what you can do today, take the leap because.... just because you can, you do not know what tomorrow will bring, and its the things you cannot predict, plan against or worry about that are the most stressful.
It is time now in 2021 to start putting plans back in place, so let's excite and ignite those Danish wedding ideas for this year and get you back in the mood for a wedding, and for getting married in Denmark, with little tasters of what Denmark has on offer for International, Foreign and Same sex couples.
We can get you married in as little as 10 days for a super fast elopement, or up to 4 months in advance if you wish to plan something more elaborate. We can change your date with as little as 24 hours notice, and the whole wedding is only €745, making getting married in Denmark a safe, covid covered and easy option for marriages in 2021. As still there is going to be nerves and the thought of "hope for the best, prepare for the worst" which is the choice of marrying in Denmark gives you, as it is so easy, low cost, flexible and simple.
The world is going to be opening up this year and we can slowly, tentatively, emerging like sleepy hibernating mice start to sniff the air of freedom with tentative wonder and excitement. And start planning for the rest of our lives, imagine walking bare foot, mask and care free with your soul mate on your wedding day through the Nordic sea after a wedding on a Danish Island... It is possible!!
Many couples have cancelled or postponed their weddings, couples have been together in various lockdowns and realised that they want to spend the rest of their lives together. Couples haven't seen each other for many many months and are just wanting to marry and be together.. and not be separated again. Now after being in close proximity or as far apart geographically as you can be it is making couples appreciate what they have, and miss what they do not have and want to get it and cling onto it with both hands.
If you are married also you have the added benefit of safe guarding against being kept apart from entering each others home countries in the future should (heaven forbid!) there be another unexpected lockdown.
As always Denmark has its arms open to all of these couples, whether you have already applied with us/another agency/Danish Agency of family law (Familieretshuset), if you already have your approval, or if you are thinking of popping the question - then you can marry in Denmark this Summer as hundreds of couples will do and have already started planning!
So let's get into the specifics! How does this all work? What are your options?
The vaccines are being rolled out throughout the world and people are ready and itching to GO and get back on that roller coaster ride that is "life"! So even though we still don't have a date for the full re-opening of the world, we certainly can see a pathway to that point.
It is expected (and on target at time of writing) that all of Denmark will be vaccinated by June 27th, and that borders are going to start opening from Spring. Licenses are valid for 4 months from date of issue (permits and visas permitting!), and the license can be extended once if you cannot marry due to lockdown free of charge.
If you wanted awesome well established Wedding Photographers, Wedding Hair and Make up, Wedding flowers then we can give you contact details of professionals we have worked with for many years, so you can simply tailor your own wedding and make it exactly what you want. How much fun is that?!?
So many couples are already going ahead and booking for May and June or on the lists for August and September for a wedding.
Let's move on and look forward and not back. It is giving so many couples hope and happiness to start planning for the future rather than dwelling on the past or just existing in the present.
You desperately want and need to start thinking about your wedding - so how can you do that? Well, firstly contact your expert wedding planners in Denmark, Leanne & Sam at Marry Abroad Simply will be very happy to have a chat with you about options. A full wedding where you literally turn up and marry is only €745, even in Copenhagen City Hall!
We will ask some questions and give you a free documents list. Which we can assure you WILL NOT include the requirement for Single Status documents nor Birth certificates!! HURRAH!
You will then start to gather the documents and email them to us, we will open a file and send you the 2 single page forms you need to sign.
We will discuss the venues and timeframes with you (if you are already set on a location that is also fine!), some are more geared for super fast weddings, some with longer lead times, some close to airports, some best for train, others for larger groups, some where you need witnesses, some where witnesses are provided, some in a City, some remote, some of them on Danish Islands, some where you present documents and marry the same day, some where you arrive the day before.
Rest assured though, as we work with ALL town halls in Denmark we will and can match you with the best Town Hall for you and your requirements. So whatever you and your partner want - and we appreciate it is your day and your needs are as unique as you are, you will have absolutely the best match for you.
Also think about the surrounding area, oh wow there is so much to choose from!! If you love beaches then we have options of Danish Islands, if you have a love for fine food, cosmopolitan vibe and cocktails then pick Copenhagen, if you love Vikings then look at Ribe, cycling you can look anywhere, UNESCO Heritage site look at Stevns, Ports and seafood then Esbjerg, Swedish influence then Helsingor, all over the country there are castles (Frederiksborg, Christiansborg, Ronseborg), funfairs such as the super famous Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen (right next to Copenhagen City Hall!!), Lego, salty liquorice, Hans Christian Andersen, pretty quaint colored houses, and the list goes on and on. But there is something to excite and delight absolutely every couple!!
You are spoilt for choice, and Denmark is not a huge country, there there are almost 100 town halls where you can marry once you get your approval from the Agency of Family Law.
Couples choose the location of the ceremony for many reasons, mainly the geographical location and how it is easier for them to get to.. No one wants to use planes, trains AND automobiles to get to their wedding (unless they have to!).
Having said that, in Denmark there are some really remote town halls if that is your thing, that may take some getting to. These locations are stunning and are always worth the travel, and you have the added benefit of having a hire car and thus seeing even more of Denmark, come for the wedding and stay for the culture!
If you down load our app on App Store and Play Store you can see all the town halls that we work with and you can see where they are and some information about the towns and surrounding areas. Just look at the venue section, it's completely free and packed with information.
The great news is that you DO NOT NEED marital status certificates or birth certificates.
* Travel documents (passport or EU ID) (with 3 months validity from the date of the ceremony)
* Residence permits (if you are living in a country where it is required) or Visa for entry into Denmark.
* Relationship document (this is something that is made yourself and we will help you with it, just to evidence longevity and contact, it is super easy and super cute to put together!).
* Proof that you are living together if you are (absolutely no problem if you are not).
* If either of you have been previously married then Decree or Death certificates
* If you have shared children together (both of your names on the birth certificate) we will need the birth certificates
Everything is done on secured emails, or encrypted communication NOT stored on a public server or public emails (for example google), and you present the originals to the registrar before your wedding.
You contact us! Thats all!!
Once you have the documents in (as outlined above) we make the application to the Agency of Family Law in Denmark. This is the government office that approves all marriages that take place in Denmark.
Usually we will receive the approval in 5 days and your 'file' will be sent electronically to the town hall that you have chosen, as soon as they have the file, we can arrange and confirm the ceremony date. We also organise the language you would like the ceremony in (English, Danish or German), the witnesses, any extra marriage certificates, anything additional
Each town hall works in different ways some you can marry next day and some you can marry in 2 weeks, some in 2 months - but don't worry about that, it's up to us to explain all of that to you.
You will marry in the town hall that you have chosen and you will receive 2 copies of the International Marriage Certificate on the day of the ceremony - which is in English, German, Danish, Spanish and French - and you are free to leave immediately!
